🧠 Temperament & character
The Old English Sheepdog is good-natured, balanced and very affectionate. He is playful and exceptionally fond of children, a calm giant who loves to live right in the middle of the family. Now and then he shows an endearing stubborn streak, but he rarely flares up. As a former drover's dog he can be watchful and announces visitors with a deep bark.
📜 Origin & history
The Old English Sheepdog emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries in England, where he drove cattle and sheep to market. His name 'Bobtail' goes back to the once-common docked, or 'bobbed', tail. Because of the ban on tail docking he now usually carries a natural tail. The robust drover's dog of old has long since become a popular family and companion dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The long, shaggy and lavish coat of the Old English Sheepdog is extremely grooming-intensive: without thorough brushing several times a week it quickly mats and then has to be clipped. Many owners therefore opt for a regular, practical short trim. In terms of exercise the breed is moderate – daily walks and play are enough for him. As a clever dog he learns well, but needs friendly, patient guidance.

The Old English Sheepdog has a life expectancy of around 10 to 12 years. Typical of the breed, hip dysplasia, cataracts and autoimmune diseases can occur; some lines also carry the MDR1 gene defect. Reputable breeders x-ray the hips, have the eyes examined and test for MDR1 where necessary. As a large breed, the Old English Sheepdog benefits from moderate growth and good weight management.

The Old English Sheepdog suits families and people who are looking for a calm, friendly dog and who do not shy away from the demanding coat care. He is a great companion for children and feels particularly at home in a house with a garden, but with enough exercise he also copes in a spacious apartment. For very cleanliness-conscious owners or those short on time, the shedding, high-maintenance coat can become a challenge. With loving guidance he is certainly also suitable for committed first-time owners.
