Guide values based on the AVMA and AKC conversion: the first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 24 — after that, depending on size, roughly +4 (small) to +7 (giant) human years per dog year. Breed, health and lifestyle affect the real age.

Why the «×7» rule is wrong

The old rule of thumb, “one dog year equals seven human years”, is outdated. Dogs do not age at a steady rate: in the first year a dog already reaches sexual maturity and is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human — far more than seven. After that the pace slows down.

Size matters too: small dogs live considerably longer on average than very large ones. Large and giant breeds age noticeably faster in the second half of their lives — a giant dog is often a senior by six or seven, a small dog only around ten.

This calculator reflects that: it counts the first year as about 15 and the second as about 24 human years, then continues based on size.
