The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is courageous, lively and immensely tough – a little hunter with a great will and a mind of his own. Despite his tenacity he is friendly, cheerful and affectionate and bonds closely with his people. With children and fellow dogs he usually gets on well, but his pronounced hunting drive is always present. His independent, stubborn manner makes him charming, but calls for consistency and patience in training.
📜 Origin & history
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne descends from the larger Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, an old Breton hunting dog. From its shorter-legged representatives a low-set dog was bred that was better suited to hunting on foot in dense undergrowth and difficult terrain. After a sharp decline in the 20th century the breed was successfully revived by dedicated breeders. Today the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a versatile scent and companion dog that is once again more frequently encountered in France.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The rough, hard coat of the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is weatherproof and easy to care for; regular brushing and occasional stripping are enough to keep it in shape. He needs plenty of exercise and, above all, mental occupation: scent work, search games and varied walks keep the little hunter content. Without occupation he tends to find his own – usually on a scent trail. In training he needs a motivating, consistent hand, for his stubborn character cannot be led with pressure.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a robust, weather-hardy breed and usually lives twelve to fourteen years. Breed-typical hereditary diseases are rare; at most one should watch the ears (inflammation), the eyes and the paws, since he likes to work in dense undergrowth. Compared with long-backed bassets his build is relatively well balanced. Responsible breeders check the eyes and joints and pay attention to functional, work-capable dogs.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne suits active people and families looking for a small, robust dog with plenty of personality and a strong urge to move. Thanks to his size he is also suited to an apartment, provided he gets enough daily exercise and mental occupation. For very comfort-loving beginners he is less ideal because of his stubbornness and hunting drive. In Switzerland he is a charming, weatherproof companion for hikes and scent work; in the woods he should be well secured because of his hunting eagerness.
