The Miniature Schnauzer combines the intelligence and charm of the schnauzers with a lively, bright nature and a strong bond with his family. He is affectionate, playful and child-friendly, but at the same time alert and a reliable alarm-giver who is attentive towards strangers and, without training, likes to bark. He is self-confident, courageous and sometimes a little stubborn, yet very keen to learn and people-oriented. With his great will to please and his cleverness he is an active, entertaining companion who needs mental occupation and close involvement in family life.
📜 Origin & history
The Miniature Schnauzer emerged at the end of the 19th century in Germany as a scaled-down variety of the Standard Schnauzer, for which smaller schnauzers were probably mated with Affenpinschers and other small breeds. The aim was a compact farm and stable dog that fought rats and mice and at the same time served as an alert little companion. He kept the typical schnauzer appearance with beard and bushy eyebrows as well as the lively, intelligent nature of the larger varieties. Today the Miniature Schnauzer is one of the most popular small pedigree dogs worldwide and a valued family and companion dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The wiry, rough-haired coat of the Miniature Schnauzer barely sheds but needs regular care in return: ideally it is stripped several times a year, the beard and leg furnishings need frequent combing so that they do not mat, and the beard gets slightly dirty after eating. As a lively, clever dog he needs daily exercise and above all mental work – walks, play, tricks or a little dog sport such as agility keep him content. He is very keen to learn and easy to handle but reacts sensitively to harsh methods and flourishes with consistent, friendly training. Early socialisation helps to channel his barking and his alertness into orderly paths.

The Miniature Schnauzer is usually robust and long-lived with a life expectancy of about 12 to 15 years, but has some breed-typical health issues. These include a tendency towards elevated blood lipid levels (hyperlipidaemia) and the pancreatitis that may result from it, the formation of urinary stones, and hereditary eye diseases such as cataract and progressive retinal atrophy. Responsible breeders have the eyes examined and pay attention to healthy blood and metabolic values in their lines. A low-fat, balanced diet, good weight management and sufficient water intake help to prevent many of these problems.

The Miniature Schnauzer is an ideal family dog for active people, families with children and also seniors looking for a small, uncomplicated but lively companion. Thanks to his handy size he is superbly suited to an apartment as well as a house, provided he gets daily exercise and mental occupation. Thanks to his eagerness to learn and his steady character he is also well suited to first-time owners, but he demands consistent training, especially in dealing with the barking. In Switzerland he is one of the popular small breeds and fits well into an active, family setting in which he is closely involved.
