🧠 Temperament & character
The Stabyhoun is gentle, affectionate and balanced – a calm companion who nonetheless likes to be active. He bonds closely with his family, is fond of children, sociable and alert, without barking excessively. At the same time he has a mind of his own and needs patience as well as friendly consistency in training. This mixture of easy-goingness, sensitivity and willingness to work makes him a pleasant family dog.
📜 Origin & history
The Stabyhoun comes from the forests and fields of Friesland, where he has been kept for centuries as a versatile farm and hunting dog. Smallholders valued him as a thrifty all-rounder who could point, retrieve, guard and even hunt vermin. For a long time he was closely linked with the related Wetterhoun, but was preserved as an independent breed. To this day the Stabyhoun is very rare, and his breeding is carefully monitored.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Stabyhoun's medium-length, smooth to slightly wavy coat is surprisingly easy to care for and needs only regular brushing; dirt often falls off by itself. As an active farm and hunting dog he needs enough daily exercise as well as mental stimulation such as scent work, retrieving or dog sports. He likes to learn but is somewhat independent, which is why varied, friendly training works best. With enough activity he shows himself pleasantly calm at home.

The Stabyhoun is considered a remarkably robust and healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 13 to 14 years. Thanks to careful, controlled breeding, severe hereditary diseases are rare, but the small gene pool still requires responsible matings. Reputable breeders work closely with the breed associations and have hips as well as relevant hereditary traits checked. Anyone looking for a puppy must usually reckon with waiting times.

The Stabyhoun suits active families and people looking for a versatile, affectionate and yet uncomplicated companion. Thanks to his gentle, child-friendly nature he is well suited to households with children and also to committed first-time owners. He needs close company and enough exercise – in Switzerland he is a great partner for hikes, scent work and family life. For frequent time alone or pure apartment keeping without activity he is less suitable.
