The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is calm, balanced and decidedly easy to handle. He combines a high need for work and exercise with a close bond to his people and steady nerves. At home he is affectionate and compatible, in the field focused and enduring. His cooperative, teachable nature makes him a pleasant working and companion dog.
📜 Origin & history
The breed emerged after the Second World War in what was then Czechoslovakia, where cynologists around Koloman Slimák wanted to create a wirehaired, weather-hardy pointing dog. For this they crossed, among others, the Weimaraner, the German Wirehaired Pointer and the Wirehaired Vizsla, which also explains the typical grey coat colour. In 1983 the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer was officially recognised by the FCI. To this day he is valued above all in Slovakia and among hunters, but is rather rare overall.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer's rough, wiry coat with beard and eyebrows is weatherproof and needs regular brushing as well as occasional stripping. As a full working dog he needs plenty of daily exercise, combined with scent, retrieving or water work. His clever, cooperative mind learns quickly and wants to be sensibly occupied. Thanks to his handleability he is easy to train with calm consistency.
🩺 Health
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is considered a robust breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Occasionally hip dysplasia occurs, but otherwise he is largely spared serious hereditary diseases. Responsible breeders X-ray the hips and pay attention to healthy, capable lines. Because of the drop ears, regular ear checks are advisable.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer suits hunters and very active people best who can offer him a real task and plenty of exercise. For pure flat keeping or little-active owners he is unsuited – he needs work and a close bond. In Switzerland, thanks to his weatherproof coat, he is a great companion for hunting, hikes and water work. When sufficiently exercised he is calm and family-friendly at home.
