🧠 Temperament & character
The Serbian Tricolour Hound is lively, brave and persistent, with a pronounced hunting drive and a good, sonorous voice. Towards its family it is loyal and affectionate and shows a balanced, friendly nature. At work it is tireless and, once on the trail, can hardly be diverted from its goal. It meets strangers attentively, without being unnecessarily sharp.
📜 Origin & history
The Serbian Tricolour Hound emerged from the same old Balkan hound type as the Serbian Hound and was for a long time listed as its tricolour variant. In 1961 it was recognised as an independent breed; the FCI lists it today under no. 229. Like its red sister, it is a hunting dog of Serbia and neighbouring countries rich in tradition and versatility. Outside the Balkans it remains rare.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Serbian Tricolour Hound's short, dense coat is weatherproof and easy to care for; regular brushing is enough. As a versatile hunter it needs plenty of exercise and extensive nose work to be balanced. It is intelligent and easy to train with consistency, but on the trail follows its strong instinct, which is why recall training and secured terrain are important. Its loud hunting voice is part of the breed's nature.
🩺 Health
The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a robust, healthy hunting breed with a life expectancy of about twelve to thirteen years and without strongly pronounced hereditary diseases. It owes its solid constitution to natural selection for hunting performance. As with all scenthounds, the drop ears should be checked regularly and, after hunting outings, injuries and ticks should be watched for. Responsible breeders pay attention to the health, steadiness and hunting aptitude of their breeding animals.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
Like its red sister, the Serbian Tricolour Hound is above all a hunting dog for active, hunting-oriented people. In an active, rural home with plenty of exercise it can, thanks to its loyal nature, also be a good family dog. It is unsuitable for a pure city apartment without activity. In Switzerland it is a rarity and found practically only with hunters.
