🧠 Temperament & character

The Segugio Maremmano is tough, agile and passionate, with great stamina and a fine nose. At home he shows himself balanced and affectionate, devotedly loyal to his family. At work he is brave, determined and independent, which makes him a versatile hunter. His pronounced hunting drive and his will to work clearly shape his nature.

📜 Origin & history

The Segugio Maremmano developed as a down-to-earth landrace in the Maremma, where hunters over generations formed a tough, versatile dog for the demanding hunt in maquis and marshland. For a long time it existed only as a regional working type without an official standard, until the Italian kennel club ENCI recognised it in 2009; the FCI lists it under no. 361. Today it is one of the most numerous hunting dogs in Italy. Outside Italy, by contrast, it is hardly widespread.

✂️ Grooming, care & training

The Segugio Maremmano comes both short-haired and rough-haired; both coat types are weather-hardy and easy to care for with regular brushing. As a hardy, versatile hunter he needs plenty of exercise in varied terrain as well as demanding nose work. He is intelligent, brave and independent, but follows his strong instinct on the trail, which is why consistent training and secured terrain are important. Without real occupation this working dog quickly becomes discontent.

🩺 Health

The Segugio Maremmano is an exceptionally robust, naturally bred landrace with a life expectancy of about twelve to thirteen years and few documented hereditary diseases. His tough constitution is the result of decades of selection for hunting performance under hard conditions. As with all scent hounds, the drop ears are to be checked regularly and, after the hunt, injuries and ticks watched for. Responsible breeders rely on healthy, high-performance working dogs.

🏡 Who is this breed right for?

The Segugio Maremmano is a decided hunting and working dog and suits best active people with a connection to hunting. In an active, rural home with plenty of exercise and occupation he can be a loyal, balanced companion. For a pure city apartment without occupation he is unsuitable; ideal are space, exercise and a meaningful task. In Switzerland he is rare and practically only to be found with hunting-active owners.
