🧠 Temperament & character
The Šarplaninac is a calm, self-assured and deeply loyal dog who is firmly attached to his family and gentle and even-tempered towards them. As a classic livestock-guarding dog he is extremely independent, thinks and acts on his own, and meets strangers with reserve to suspicion. Towards predators and genuine threats he shows impressive fearlessness and determination, without being nervous or frantic in everyday life. His strong protective and territorial drive calls for early socialisation and a calm, consistent handler who gives him guidance without wanting to break his independent character.
📜 Origin & history
The Šarplaninac is named after the Šar Mountains (Šar Planina) on the border between North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia, where he guarded the shepherds' flocks for centuries. He is one of the old molosser livestock-guarding dogs of the Balkans and was selected solely for weather-hardiness, strength, courage and protective instinct. For a long time he was known as the 'Illyrian Shepherd Dog' before being renamed 'Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog – Šarplaninac' and recognised by the FCI. To this day he is valued in his homeland as an indispensable livestock-guarding dog and is one of the region's national breeds.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Šarplaninac's dense, long double coat is weatherproof and relatively easy to care for, but must be brushed regularly, and much more often during the heavy moult. As a deliberate livestock-guarding dog he needs no performance sport, but he does need extended, calm walks, plenty of space and ideally a real task as a guardian. In training, patience, consistency and respect for his independence are indispensable – he cannot be drilled, but only won over through fair, trusting leadership. Early, careful socialisation and secure fencing are crucial, since he defends his territory seriously and consistently.

The Šarplaninac is a robust, original breed with a life expectancy of about 11 to 13 years and, compared with many other large breeds, pleasingly healthy. The most likely condition, as usual with large dogs, is occasional hip dysplasia; as a large dog he also carries a certain risk of gastric torsion. The broad, functional gene pool of working dogs contributes to his overall resilience. Responsible breeders nonetheless x-ray the hips of their breeding animals and pay attention to healthy joints and a stable, temperamentally sound character.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Šarplaninac is suited to experienced, calm owners with a house, a well-secured plot and ideally a rural setting or a genuine guarding task. He is not suited to an apartment, to beginners or to people without experience of large, independent protection dogs. Towards his family and familiar children he is calm, gentle and loyal, but his size, his protective drive and his barking behaviour call for a suitable environment and confident leadership. In Switzerland he is also used as a livestock-guarding dog; any cantonal regulations should be checked before acquiring one as a family dog.
