🧠 Temperament & character
Lively, intelligent and remarkably nimble, the Puli is a spirited dog with great enthusiasm for work and a keen mind. He bonds closely with his family, is playful, fond of children and an attentive alarm-giver who is at first reserved towards strangers. His proverbial jumping ability and agility reflect his agile, active character. With good socialisation he is easy-going, but his lively nature calls for consistent training and plenty of occupation.
📜 Origin & history
The Puli is one of the ancient Hungarian herding breeds and probably came to the Hungarian plains with the Magyars over a thousand years ago. As a nimble droving dog he was famous for running across the backs of tightly packed sheep and guided large flocks with astonishing agility. His dense corded coat protected him against weather and predators. After a low point in the 20th century the breed was deliberately preserved and is today known worldwide as a herding, sport and family dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Puli's famous corded coat forms at about a year of age and must then be separated into cords by hand on a regular basis - it is not brushed. After bathing, drying the dense cords takes a very long time, which is why grooming and keeping him clean require some practice; some owners also have the coat clipped shorter. As an agile, energetic dog the Puli needs plenty of daily exercise and mental occupation. Thanks to his intelligence and agility he is an excellent sporting dog, for example in agility or tracking work.
🩺 Health
The Puli is considered a robust and remarkably long-lived breed that often reaches twelve to sixteen years of age. Hereditary diseases are comparatively rare; occasionally hip dysplasia and eye conditions such as cataract or progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) occur. Reputable breeders have the parent animals x-rayed for hip dysplasia and their eyes examined. With enough exercise and good care this vital Hungarian often stays lively and active into old age.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Puli is a wonderful match for active people and families who want a spirited, thinking dog and enjoy his special grooming. Given enough to do he is adaptable enough for an apartment, but feels happiest with plenty of exercise and access to nature. For open-minded beginners he is suitable with a little consistency, provided they are willing to take on his energy and grooming. In Switzerland the weatherproof, sporty Puli is a cheerful companion for hikes, dog sports and an active family life.
