The Pudelpointer is calm, balanced and exceptionally easy to handle. He combines eagerness to work and stamina with a pleasant composure in the home and a close bond with his people. He is intelligent, willing to learn and cooperative, which makes working with him particularly pleasant. His stable nature and his good talent for water work and retrieving make him a versatile partner.
📜 Origin & history
The Pudelpointer was founded from 1881 onwards in Germany, when the cynologist Baron von Zedlitz crossed Poodles with English Pointers. The aim was an ideal working dog that combined the merits of both breeds — nose and pointing from the Pointer, brains and love of water from the Poodle. From the outset, working performance rather than appearance was in the foreground. To this day the Pudelpointer is bred strictly according to hunting suitability and therefore remains rather rare.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Pudelpointer's rough, wiry coat is weatherproof and easy to care for; it needs regular brushing and occasional stripping, but sheds little. As an all-round working gundog he needs plenty of daily exercise combined with nose, retrieving and water work. His clever, cooperative mind wants to be kept busy and learns quickly and reliably. Thanks to how easy he is to handle, training usually succeeds without problems, with calm consistency.
🩺 Health
The Pudelpointer is considered a robust, long-lived breed with a life expectancy of around 13 to 14 years. Occasionally hip dysplasia occurs, but otherwise, thanks to performance-oriented breeding, he is largely spared serious hereditary diseases. Responsible breeders X-ray the hips and choose healthy, work-loving parent animals. Because of the drop ears, regular ear checks are sensible.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Pudelpointer is best suited to hunters or very active, sporty people who can offer him a real task. For pure apartment keeping without activity, or for comfort-loving owners, he is not suitable — he needs work, exercise and a close bond. In Switzerland he is an excellent companion for hunting, dummy training and water work. Thanks to his calm nature he is pleasant in the home, provided he is kept occupied.
