🧠 Temperament & character
Lively, intelligent and remarkably affectionate, the Portuguese Sheepdog is a spirited dog that bonds closely with its main person - not for nothing is it affectionately called the 'monkey dog'. He is playful, watchful and eager to learn, yet at first reserved towards strangers and a reliable alarm-giver. He gets on well with children and, when well socialised, with other dogs, and loves to be at the heart of family life. His lively nature and need for exercise make him a cheerful but demanding companion.
📜 Origin & history
The Cão da Serra de Aires comes from the Serra de Aires region in southern Portugal, where it herded and drove sheep, goats and cattle on the vast estates of the Alentejo. Its ancestors probably go back to southern French herding dogs such as the Pyrenean Sheepdog or the Briard, which were introduced in the early 20th century. For a long time it was known only to the shepherds of the Alentejo and almost fell into oblivion before dedicated enthusiasts preserved it from the mid-20th century onwards. Today the 'monkey dog' is popular beyond Portugal's borders as a loyal companion and family dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The long, straight or slightly wavy coat of the Portuguese Sheepdog resembles goat hair and rarely tends to mat; regular brushing keeps it in good condition, and it is usually not clipped. As an active herding dog, he needs plenty of daily exercise and mental challenges to be content and balanced. Thanks to his intelligence and eagerness to learn, he is excellently suited to dog sports such as agility or obedience. Because of his strong bond, he should spend as much time as possible with his family and not be left alone for long.

The Portuguese Sheepdog is regarded as an overall robust, naturally bred breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to thirteen years. Occasionally - as with many medium-sized breeds - hip dysplasia occurs, which is why reputable breeders have the parent animals x-rayed. Otherwise he is little prone to breed-typical hereditary diseases and is distinguished by a good constitution. With enough exercise, good food and regular grooming, the 'monkey dog' usually stays vital into old age.

The Portuguese Sheepdog is an excellent fit for active people and families looking for an affectionate, thinking dog who let him share closely in daily life. With sufficient occupation he is adaptable enough for an apartment, but feels most comfortable with access to a garden and nature. For open-minded beginners he is suitable with some commitment, provided they meet his need for exercise and closeness. In Switzerland, the sporty, weatherproof 'monkey dog' is a cheerful companion for hikes, dog sports and an active family life.
