🧠 Temperament & character
The Podenco Canario is lively, robust and a passionate hunter, yet obedient and devoted to its person. At home it often shows itself calmer and more affectionate than one would expect from such a spirited hunting dog. On the hunt it becomes vocal and is led by its strong prey drive, which is why off-leash freedom needs to be well considered. With familiar children and compatible dogs it usually gets on well, but towards small rodents and cats its hunting instinct remains alert. It is intelligent and sensitive and works best together with a person it trusts.
📜 Origin & history
The Podenco Canario belongs to the old family of Mediterranean sighthound and scent hound types and has been used for rabbit hunting on the Canary Islands for centuries. It often hunts in small groups and searches through lava fields, dry-stone walls and scrubland, both tracking down and cornering its quarry. Much is speculated about its exact origin, but today it is regarded as an independent breed that is superbly adapted to the Canarian climate and terrain. Outside Spain it remains rare and has stayed primarily a working hunting dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Podenco Canario's short, smooth coat is exceptionally easy to care for and needs hardly more than occasional brushing. It is quite different with its exercise needs: this enduring runner needs plenty of exercise, extensive walks and the chance to run and use its senses in a safe setting. Mentally it wants to be occupied with nose work, search games and tasks, otherwise it finds an occupation of its own. In training it is trainable but independent, which is why patience, positive motivation and a securely fenced garden are advisable.

The Podenco Canario is a primitive breed that has remained tough, with few known hereditary diseases and a life expectancy of around 11 to 13 years. As a slender, sighthound-like dog it can react sensitively to certain anaesthetics, which the vet should be aware of. A diet tailored to its build and sufficient but not excessive exercise during growth help keep joints and tendons healthy. Since the breed is still strongly selected for its hunting function, buyers should look for temperamentally stable, well-socialised parent animals from responsible breeding.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Podenco Canario suits sporty, active people who can offer a run-loving hunting dog plenty of exercise and occupation. For a purely apartment life without exercise it is little suited; a house with a securely fenced garden in a rural setting suits it considerably better. For beginners it is only recommended with good guidance and realistic expectations because of its strong hunting drive and its independence. In Switzerland it can be a wonderful partner for hikes, dog sports or coursing, provided the owner has its prey drive under control and observes wildlife protection regulations.
