🧠 Temperament & character

The Phalène is lively, intelligent and attentive – an alert little dog with a pronounced eagerness to learn that resembles the Papillon in its nature. It is friendly, affectionate and very people-oriented, while being more self-assured and energetic than its delicate build suggests. It gets on well with children and other animals, and towards strangers it is usually open. As a clever dog it needs mental stimulation in order to stay balanced.

📜 Origin & history

The Phalène is the older of the two ear varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel and was already a popular lap dog at the European courts during the Renaissance. Numerous old paintings show drop-eared toy spaniels on the laps of nobles. Only later did the erect-eared Papillon variety emerge from this original form and overtake the Phalène in popularity. Today the Phalène is the rarer of the two forms, but is valued by lovers of the original appearance.

✂️ Grooming, care & training

The Phalène's long, silky coat has no undercoat, sheds moderately and is easy to care for: regular brushing keeps it shiny and free of knots, with the feathered drop ears deserving particular attention. Despite its size it has a good need for exercise and activity and loves walks, play and thinking tasks. Like the Papillon it is highly intelligent and very successful in dog sport such as agility and obedience. Positive, varied training keeps it ideally occupied.

🩺 Health

The Phalène, like the Papillon, is usually a healthy, long-lived dog with a life expectancy of about 13 to 16 years. Breed-typical conditions that can occur include patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), dental problems and, in some puppies, an open fontanelle. Reputable breeders have eyes and kneecaps examined and pay attention to healthy, steady parent animals. Regular dental and ear care prevents everyday problems.

🏡 Who is this breed right for?

The Phalène suits active people and families looking for a small, alert and eager-to-learn companion with classic, drop-eared elegance. It is suitable for an apartment and for first-time owners, provided they offer it enough activity. It gets on well with children, though considerate handling is important because of its delicate build. In Switzerland it is a versatile everyday companion and a great partner for dog sport – ideal for all who appreciate the original form of the Continental Toy Spaniel.
