The Perdiguero de Burgos is calm, balanced and good-natured. At work he shows himself enduring, concentrated and with a fine nose, yet less impetuous than many other pointing dogs. At home he is affectionate, calm and compatible, which makes him a pleasant companion. His composure and biddability noticeably ease living together.
π Origin & history
The Perdiguero de Burgos is one of the oldest pointing dogs of Spain and has been used for hunting in the Burgos region since the 16th century. As a robust, weather-hardy braque he helped in the hunt for partridge and hare on the Castilian plateau. He is considered the ancestor of several modern pointing breeds and influenced, among others, later Pointer lines. Today he is valued above all in Spain as a reliable hunting dog.

The short, dense coat of the Perdiguero de Burgos is very easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. As an enduring hunting dog he needs plenty of regular exercise, and his unhurried working pace favours longer, calm sessions. Scent work and varied occupation do his calm, attentive mind good. Thanks to his composure and biddability he is uncomplicated to train.

The Perdiguero de Burgos is considered a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. As with many larger breeds, hip problems can occasionally occur, and because of the drop ears, ear checks are sensible. Responsible breeders x-ray the hips and pay attention to healthy lines. Overall the breed is largely spared from serious hereditary diseases.

The Perdiguero de Burgos suits active people looking for a calm, balanced hunting or hiking companion. Thanks to his easy-going nature he is pleasant in everyday life but still needs regular, extensive exercise. In Switzerland he is well suited to long hikes and scent work in nature. For pure city apartments without exercise he is less suitable; in a rural setting he feels most at home.
