Norrbottenspitz
🧠 Temperament & character
The Norrbottenspitz is attentive, lively and fearless, tireless and focused when hunting. At home it shows itself friendly, balanced and affectionate and is a pleasant, sociable companion. It is watchful and reliably sounds the alarm, which also makes it a good little guardian. As a hunting spitz it brings along a distinct hunting drive and a certain fondness for barking.
📜 Origin & history
The Norrbottenspitz comes from the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten, where it served as an agile hunting dog for birds and small game as well as a farm and guard dog. With the decline of rural hunting, the breed was considered almost extinct in the mid-20th century. Thanks to dedicated enthusiasts, it was rebuilt from the last remaining stock. Today it is re-established primarily in Scandinavia.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Norrbottenspitz's short, dense coat, usually white with coloured markings, is decidedly easy to care for; occasional brushing is enough. As a lively hunting spitz it needs plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and, most of all, a real task. It is intelligent, eager to learn and easy to handle, which also makes it attractive for dog sport such as agility. Its hunting drive and its fondness for using its voice should be channelled early.
🩺 Health
The Norrbottenspitz is a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 13 to 15 years. Breed-typical hereditary diseases are hardly known, which makes it a remarkably healthy dog. Because the population is small, responsible breeders pay particular attention to genetic diversity and general health. Plenty of exercise and a healthy weight support its longevity.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Norrbottenspitz suits active people and families who enjoy a lively, versatile dog. Thanks to its size and its friendly nature it is also suitable for an apartment, provided it gets enough exercise and activity. Its hunting drive and its fondness for barking should be taken into account. In Switzerland it is rare, but for the sporty and active or for hunters it is an appealing little companion.
