Maremma Sheepdog
🧠 Temperament & character
Independent, courageous and watchful, the Maremmano is a self-reliant livestock-guarding dog that seems calm and even-tempered but intervenes without hesitation in the face of danger. Towards his family and the animals in his care he is gentle and protective, but reserved and suspicious with strangers. He is used to making his own decisions and does not submit unconditionally - obedience on command is not his strong suit. This independence makes him an impressive guardian but calls for an understanding of his nature.
📜 Origin & history
The Maremma Sheepdog has guarded the flocks of the Abruzzo and the Tuscan Maremma for centuries, protecting them against wolves and once also bears. He accompanied the flocks on their seasonal migration, the transhumance, between mountain pastures and lowlands. His white coat allowed him to be told apart from predators in the dark and at the same time camouflaged him among the sheep. Today's standard unites the once separate strains from the Maremma and the Abruzzo into a single breed, valued around the world once again as a livestock-guarding dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Maremmano's dense, long and coarse white coat protects him in any weather and is astonishingly easy to care for; regular brushing is enough, more often during the moult. As a calm but enduring dog he needs space and plenty of outdoor exercise, but no athletic performance programme. What matters is a meaningful task that suits his guarding instinct, along with plenty of time in the fresh air. In training, early socialisation, patience and respect for his independence are decisive, for he cannot be drilled.
🩺 Health
The Maremma Sheepdog is regarded as an overall robust, close-to-nature breed with a life expectancy of around eleven to thirteen years. As with many large breeds, hip dysplasia can occur, which is why reputable breeders have the parent animals x-rayed. As a deep-chested dog, the risk of gastric torsion should also be kept low through calm feeding and several small meals. On the whole he is a tough, weatherproof dog that rarely falls seriously ill when kept appropriately.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Maremmano is a dog for experienced owners with plenty of space - ideally a rural property, a farm or a large, well-secured plot. He is not suited to an apartment, city life or inexperienced first-time owners. He needs people who understand his independence and protective drive and who socialise him early, as well as a willingness to deal with his nocturnal barking and his territoriality. In Switzerland he is used as a livestock-guarding dog in the Alpine region; the cantonal regulations should be clarified before acquiring one.
