The Kromfohrländer is lively, affectionate and very adaptable - a sensitive dog that bonds closely to its family and accompanies them attentively. It is teachable and wants to please, which is why it is easy to train. Towards strangers it behaves rather reservedly and reports attentively without being intrusive. As a pure companion dog without hunting drive, it is pleasant and compatible in everyday life.
📜 Origin & history
The Kromfohrländer is one of the youngest German dog breeds and emerged after the Second World War. The starting point was a stray mongrel male that the breeder Ilse Schleifenbaum found in the region around Siegen; from his mating with a Fox Terrier female the new breed arose. It received its name after the 'Krom Fohr' field in this area. In 1955 the Kromfohrländer was officially recognised and has since been bred exclusively as a family and companion dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Kromfohrländer comes in a wirehaired and a smooth-haired variety; both are relatively easy to care for and need only regular brushing, the wirehaired form occasional stripping. Its need for exercise is moderate: daily walks, play and some occupation are enough for the versatile dog. It is teachable and eager to learn, which is why joint training, puzzle games and light dog sports give it pleasure. As a sensitive dog it responds best to friendly, patient training.

The Kromfohrländer is usually a healthy dog with a life expectancy of about 13 to 15 years. In some lines patellar luxation, the metabolic disorder cystinuria, a footpad hyperkeratosis (horny pads) and epilepsy occur. Since the gene pool of the young breed is small, reputable breeders pay particular attention to DNA tests, health examinations and broad matings. Overall the Kromfohrländer is considered a robust, long-lived companion.

The Kromfohrländer is an ideal family dog for people looking for an affectionate, uncomplicated companion without hunting drive. It is well suited to families with children, couples and also first-time owners, provided they take its affectionate nature seriously. It feels comfortable in an apartment as well as in a house and adapts flexibly, as long as it spends a lot of time with its family. As a people-oriented dog it does not like to be alone for long - in Switzerland it is a pleasant, everyday-suitable companion for town and country.
