🧠 Temperament & character
Lively, alert and remarkably intelligent, the Croatian Sheepdog is an eager worker who learns quickly and loves to please. He bonds closely with his handler, is affectionate and easy to lead, but reliably announces whatever catches his attention. He is reserved towards strangers at first, yet gets on well with familiar people, children and - with good socialisation - other dogs. His temperament and urge to move make him an active, attentive companion.
📜 Origin & history
The Hrvatski ovcar goes back to old native herding dogs of Slavonia and is mentioned as early as writings from the 14th century. For centuries he drove and guarded the sheep and cattle herds of the Pannonian Plain, working closely with the shepherds. From the 1930s the veterinarian and cynologist Stjepan Romic pursued the targeted breeding and recognition of the breed. In this way the agile black herding dog has been preserved in its original form to this day.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short, wavy to curly black coat of the Croatian Sheepdog is short and low-maintenance on the head and legs; regular brushing is enough. More important is keeping him occupied: this active dog needs plenty of exercise and, above all, mental challenges to be content. Dog sports such as agility, obedience or treibball suit him extremely well. Thanks to his intelligence and willingness to learn, he is easy and enjoyable to train - best done in a motivating and varied way.
🩺 Health
The Croatian Sheepdog is one of the especially robust and healthy dog breeds and is hardly affected by breed-typical hereditary diseases. Its close-to-nature breeding as a pure working dog has produced a hardy, long-lived dog. Occasionally - as in many breeds - hip dysplasia can occur, which is why serious breeders have the parent animals X-rayed. With good care this vital breed reaches an age of around twelve to fourteen years.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Croatian Sheepdog is best suited to active people and families who can offer him plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Thanks to his size and adaptability he can also cope in an apartment, provided he is sufficiently occupied - ideal is a home with access to nature and activity. Because of his eagerness to learn and his trainability, he is also suitable for committed beginners. In Switzerland this still rare herding dog is a weatherproof, enduring companion for hikes and dog sports.
