🧠 Temperament & character

The Medium Poodle is bright, clever and very people-oriented - a playful dog closely bonded to his family. He is adaptable, friendly and eager to learn, which makes him easy to train. With children, other dogs and pets he usually gets along well, and strangers he mostly meets openly. As an intelligent dog he needs meaningful occupation, otherwise he can quickly grow bored.

📜 Origin & history

Like all poodles, the Medium Poodle goes back to the original water retriever, which fetched shot waterfowl from the water - the name derives from the Old German 'puddeln' for splashing in the water. France is considered the country of origin, where the poodle soon rose from a hunting dog to an elegant society dog. From the large original type, smaller varieties were purposefully bred over the centuries, among them the medium-sized Medium Poodle. He combines the breed's character traits in a size suited to everyday life.

✂️ Grooming, care & training

The curly, hardly shedding coat must be brushed regularly and professionally clipped every few weeks, as it otherwise matts quickly. The Medium Poodle has a moderate need for exercise and needs above all mental work: puzzle games, dog sports, retrieving or trick training give him great pleasure. Thanks to his high intelligence he learns very quickly and wants real tasks. Consistent, varied and positive training brings the best out of him.

🩺 Health

The Medium Poodle is considered a robust, long-lived breed with a life expectancy of about 13 to 15 years. Occasionally patellar luxation, eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and epilepsy occur. Reputable breeders have the eyes and kneecaps examined and carry out the corresponding DNA tests. All in all the Medium Poodle is a healthy companion with a high life expectancy.

🏡 Who is this breed right for?

Thanks to his practical size and his friendly, eager-to-learn nature, the Medium Poodle is an ideal family and companion dog - also for first-time owners, provided they invest time in training, occupation and coat care. He feels comfortable in the apartment as in the house and adapts well to his people's lifestyle. As a clever dog he needs mental occupation, but is otherwise uncomplicated. In Switzerland he is excellently suited as a versatile everyday companion for families, couples and active seniors.
