🧠 Temperament & character
Intelligent, lively and blessed with great enthusiasm for work, the Catalan Sheepdog is an attentive and adaptable companion. He bonds closely with his family, is fond of children and, when well socialised, gets on well with other dogs. As an independently working herding dog he likes to think along and shows a healthy reserve towards strangers without being fearful. His eagerness to learn makes training pleasant, but he needs a meaningful task to stay balanced.
📜 Origin & history
For centuries the Gos d'Atura Català has herded and driven flocks of sheep and cattle in the Pyrenees and the Catalan hinterland. Thanks to his cleverness and stamina he often worked independently, leading the flock and guarding it at the same time. During the Spanish Civil War he was also used as a messenger and guard dog, but afterwards fell almost into oblivion. Dedicated breeders preserved the breed, which today is finding new admirers above all as a family and sporting dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Catalan Sheepdog's long, slightly wavy or rough coat forms shaggy sections on the head, belly and legs and needs regular brushing to prevent matting – a little more often during the moult. He is an enduring dog that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation; long walks, hikes and dog sports keep him fit. Mental work such as trick training, tracking or treibball challenges his alert mind. Thanks to his eagerness to learn and his trainability he is easy to bring up, but he reacts sensitively to harsh methods.

The Catalan Sheepdog is considered a robust and generally healthy breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Occasionally hip dysplasia and hereditary eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) occur. Reputable breeders have their breeding animals x-rayed for hip dysplasia and their eyes examined. With enough exercise, good food and regular grooming, this Catalan usually stays vital well into old age.

The Catalan Sheepdog is an excellent match for active individuals and families who enjoy being outdoors and can give him a task. With enough activity he is adaptable enough to live even in a larger apartment, but he feels most at home with access to a garden and nature. Thanks to his friendly nature and his eagerness to learn, with a little commitment he is also suitable for open-minded beginners. In Switzerland he is an ideal companion for hiking and sports enthusiasts and copes wonderfully with the mountain climate.
