The Hollandse Smoushond is friendly, good-natured and lively, and pleasantly uncomplicated. He is affectionate, people-oriented and usually gets on well with children and other dogs. As a former rat catcher he is watchful and attentive, but not especially yappy. His balanced nature makes him a pleasant, easygoing everyday companion.
📜 Origin & history
In the 19th century the Hollandse Smoushond was popular in the Netherlands as a 'gentleman's stable dog' that kept stables and coaches free of rats and mice. After the World Wars the rare breed came close to extinction several times and was painstakingly rebuilt through the commitment of individual enthusiasts. To this day the Smoushond remains rare and is found mainly in his homeland.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The wire-haired, straw-yellow coat of the Hollandse Smoushond needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping to maintain its typical texture; it is not clipped. His exercise needs are moderate: daily walks and some play satisfy this lively but not hyperactive dog. He is trainable and enjoys working together with his person, which makes him easy to train. A little mental occupation keeps him content and balanced.

The Hollandse Smoushond is a comparatively robust and healthy breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Because of the small gene pool, careful, health-oriented breeding planning is especially important to avoid inbreeding. Serious breed-typical hereditary diseases are so far hardly known. Responsible breeders nonetheless pay attention to general health, eyes and a stable musculoskeletal system.

The Hollandse Smoushond is an uncomplicated, friendly companion well suited to families and also to beginners. Thanks to his moderate size and activity level he fits both an apartment and a house with a garden, provided he gets daily exercise and closeness. As a rare breed, however, he is not easy to obtain – interested owners often have to allow for patience and a waiting period. Anyone looking for a friendly, moderately active dog without great extremes will find a wonderful partner in him.
