🧠 Temperament & character
The Halden Hound is friendly, calm and robust, even-tempered and affectionate indoors. On the hunt it shows itself enduring, passionate and persistent, with a good will to follow a trail. It builds a close bond with its family and is uncomplicated to handle. Its hunting instinct remains pronounced, however, so it needs occupation and exercise.
📜 Origin & history
The Halden Hound arose in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the area around the Norwegian town of Halden, through crossing native dogs with English Foxhounds and other scent hounds. The two world wars and diseases severely decimated the population, so that the breed remains very rare to this day. It is kept almost exclusively in Norway as a solitary hunting dog for hares.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Halden Hound's short, dense coat is weatherproof and easy to care for; occasional brushing is usually enough. As an enduring hunting dog it needs plenty of exercise and nose work, gladly also in cold and snow. Thanks to its affectionate nature it is easy to motivate, but it should be led with patience and consistency. The ears deserve regular checking.
🩺 Health
The Halden Hound is a fundamentally robust hunting breed with a life expectancy of around ten to twelve years. Because of the very small population, responsible, broadly based breeding is especially important in order to preserve the genetic diversity. Breed-typical clusters of disease are hardly documented, but the small population size requires careful breeding planning. Healthy parent animals and checking of the ears are the priority.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Halden Hound suits active people and hunters who can offer it plenty of exercise and nose work and can handle its hunting instinct. Thanks to its calm, affectionate manner it is pleasant indoors, but it absolutely needs sufficient occupation. It feels most content in a household with access to nature and a cold climate. Outside Norway – and thus also in Switzerland – it is practically never encountered.
