The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is brave, passionate and enduring, robust and endowed with a strong will. On the hunt it pursues fox, hare and wild boar with persistence and determination. Towards the family it is friendly, affectionate and open, but remains independent and self-assured. Its Breton robustness is paired with a lively, good-natured temperament.
📜 Origin & history
The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is one of the oldest French hunting breeds and has been native to Brittany for centuries. Originally it was even used in packs for wolf hunting; after the decline of the wolf it found new tasks in hunting fox, hare and wild boar. Thanks to dedicated breeders the breed could be preserved after drops in numbers.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne's rough, dense coat is weatherproof and needs regular brushing as well as occasional stripping. As an enduring hunting dog it needs plenty of exercise and extensive nose work to be content. Because of its strong will, training should begin early and be consistent but friendly. The long ears require regular checking.

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is a robust, healthy hunting breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to thirteen years. Breed-typical hereditary diseases are hardly known, which makes it a comparatively uncomplicated dog. Attention should be paid to the ears because of the long flaps, in order to prevent inflammation. Responsible breeders rely on healthy, temperamentally stable parent animals.

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne suits active people and hunters who appreciate its urge to move and its passion. For beginners it is only suitable to a limited extent, as its strong will and hunting drive require consistent guidance. It feels most at ease in a house with a garden and plenty of access to nature. In Switzerland it is rarely encountered, but with sporty owners it can be a sociable companion.
