The Grand Griffon Vendéen is spirited, courageous and headstrong, with great stamina and a pronounced nose. On the hunt he takes on wild boar and other big game boldly and is not easily deterred. He is an independent working dog that needs clear rules and consistent leadership. Towards the family he can be affectionate, but he remains a strong-willed character.
📜 Origin & history
The Grand Griffon Vendéen is the ancestral form of the Vendée griffons and goes back to old French rough-coated hounds, including ancestors from the line of the Chien Gris de Saint-Louis. Over the centuries he was bred for the demanding hunting of big game in dense, rough terrain. The smaller Vendée griffons and bassets are derived from him.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Grand Griffon Vendéen's rough, medium-length coat needs regular brushing and occasional stripping so that it stays functional. As a powerful pack hound he has a very high need for exercise and requires demanding scent work. Because of his headstrong nature, training is demanding and calls for experience, patience and consistency. Without enough activity he quickly becomes self-reliant and hard to steer.

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is fundamentally robust and weather-hardy, with a life expectancy of about ten to twelve years. Occasionally hip dysplasia occurs and, owing to the drop ears, ear infections. Regular ear care and measured exercise during the growth phase support his health. Responsible breeders pay attention to healthy joints and robust working lines.

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is a demanding hunting dog that belongs in experienced, active hands. For beginners, the city flat or a quiet family life he is unsuited because of his headstrong nature and his need for exercise. He needs plenty of running, real tasks and clear, consistent leadership. In Switzerland he is rare and is kept almost exclusively for hunting.
