🧠 Temperament & character
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is calm, fine-nosed and hardy, with an elegant, almost aristocratic air. On the hunt he impresses with speed, precision and a deep, sonorous voice. At home he is gentle, balanced and affectionate, but remains an independent working dog. His hunting instinct and independence shape him as much as his good nature.
📜 Origin & history
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois emerged in the 19th century, when Baron Joseph de Carayon-Latour crossed the old Saintongeois with the Grand Bleu de Gascogne to save an endangered line. In doing so he combined the refinement of the Saintonge hounds with the power and nose of the Gascony hounds. To this day the breed is used above all in France for the fast hunting of wild boar and roe deer.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois's short coat is uncomplicated, but the long ears should be checked and cleaned regularly. As a fast, hardy pack hound he needs plenty of exercise and extensive scent work over long distances. He works independently and requires patient, consistent leadership. Without genuine hunting activity he struggles to settle.
🩺 Health
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is considered a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of about ten to twelve years. Breed-typical hereditary conditions are hardly known, but the long ears make regular ear care important. As a large, deep-chested scent hound there is a certain risk of gastric torsion. Responsible breeders rely on healthy, capable parent animals.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is a specialised hunting dog intended primarily for pack hunting. For a city apartment or as a pure family dog he is hardly suitable, because of his pace, his exercise needs and his hunting instinct. He needs plenty of space, sustained exercise and, ideally, the company of other dogs. In Switzerland he is extremely rare and found practically only in a hunting context.
