The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is a calm, dignified dog with a deep, sonorous voice and a fine nose. On the hunt he shows great stamina and works with calm persistence on long trails. Towards the family he is gentle, friendly and balanced, yet remains independent and not very submissive. His strong hunting drive and his loud voice clearly shape his character.
📜 Origin & history
The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is one of the oldest French scent hound breeds and comes from the Gascony region in the south-west. For centuries he was used for the vocal pack hunting of hare, wild boar and once even wolf. As the ancestor of numerous other scent hounds he has significantly shaped the development of many modern hounds.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short, dense coat of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne is easy to care for, but the long ears must be cleaned regularly to prevent infections. As an enduring pack hound he needs a great deal of exercise and extensive scent work over long distances. He works independently and can only be guided with patience and consistency. Without real hunting or sporting activity he is hardly kept occupied.

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is a robust dog with a life expectancy of around ten to twelve years. Because of the long ears he is prone to ear infections, which is why regular checking is important. As a large, deep-chested hound there is also a certain risk of gastric torsion. Responsible breeders pay attention to healthy joints and a solid constitution.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is above all a hunting and pack hound for people who can offer him plenty of exercise and scent work. Because of his need for exercise, his hunting drive and his loud voice he is unsuitable for a city apartment. He needs space, long runs and ideally the company of other dogs. In Switzerland he is rare and found almost only among hunting-oriented owners.
