🧠 Temperament & character
The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is powerful, enduring and fine-nosed, with a strongly pronounced pack instinct. On the hunt he shows himself brave and passionate and goes boldly after big game such as wild boar. In the pack he is sociable, but needs plenty of exercise and hunting occupation. His energy and independence require experienced, consistent leadership.
📜 Origin & history
The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore arose from the crossing of tricolour French pack hounds with the English Foxhound and, of the three varieties, carries the most Foxhound blood. He was recognised as an independent breed in 1957 and is the most common of the large Anglo-Français. To this day he is worked predominantly in packs for hunting big game.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore's short, tricolour coat is easy to care for, but ears, paws and joints deserve regular attention. As a pack hound for big game he has an enormous need for exercise and needs long runs as well as intensive scent work. He is most content with other dogs and a genuine hunting task. His training demands consistency, patience and plenty of physical exercise.

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a robust pack breed with a life expectancy of around ten to twelve years. Because of the long ears, regular ear checks are important, and with these large, active dogs attention should be paid to paws and joints. As with all deep-chested scent hounds, there is a certain risk of gastric torsion. Responsible breeding relies on healthy, high-performing lines.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a working dog for big-game hunting and is best placed in a pack. For an apartment or as a pure family dog he is hardly suitable because of his urge to move and his hunting instinct. He needs plenty of space, enduring exercise and the company of other dogs. In Switzerland he is encountered almost exclusively in a hunting context.
