🧠 Temperament & character

The Gończy Polski is spirited, biddable and energetic, while being astonishingly affectionate towards his family. On the hunt he shows himself brave, enduring and reliable, with a far-carrying, sonorous voice. He builds a close bond with his person and is easy to motivate. In the home he is calm and balanced, provided he finds enough activity outdoors.

📜 Origin & history

The Gończy Polski has its roots in old Polish scent hound types and was developed as a lighter, more agile alternative to the heavy Ogar Polski. After the rebuilding of the population in the 20th century, the breed was provisionally recognised by the FCI in 2006. It is valued above all in Poland as a versatile hunting dog for forest and mountains.

✂️ Grooming, care & training

The short, dense coat of the Gończy Polski is weatherproof and needs only little care; regular brushing usually suffices. As an active hunting dog he needs plenty of exercise, scent work and mental occupation. Thanks to his biddability he is easy to train, but should be guided consistently and with motivation. Without sufficient activity he finds a task for himself.

🩺 Health

The Gończy Polski is regarded as a robust, healthy hunting breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Breed-typical hereditary diseases are hardly known, which makes him a comparatively trouble-free dog. As with all scent hounds, regular checking of the ears is advisable. Responsible breeders pay attention to healthy, working-capable parent animals.

🏡 Who is this breed right for?

The Gończy Polski is best suited to active people or hunters who offer him plenty of exercise and meaningful tasks. Thanks to his affectionate, biddable nature he is more easy-going than many other scent hounds, but remains a true hunting dog. For a city apartment without activity he is unsuitable; in an active household with access to nature he feels at home. In Switzerland he is still a rarity.
