🧠 Temperament & character
The Galgo Español is calm, gentle and reserved, in the house a decidedly undemanding and quiet dog. He is affectionate and sensitive towards his people, and often meets strangers somewhat shyly and reservedly. As a typical sighthound he cannot tolerate harsh treatment and needs patient, loving guidance to gain confidence. Outdoors he shows a strong prey drive and the fast, elegant joy of movement of his breed.
📜 Origin & history
The Galgo Español is one of the oldest sighthound breeds in Europe and is traditionally kept in Spain by the so-called galgueros for coursing hares. Unfortunately, to this day many Galgos are abandoned or killed each year in Spain after the hunting season, which has prompted animal welfare organisations throughout Europe to take action. Numerous Galgos find a new home through such organisations, in Switzerland too, where the breed is thereby becoming increasingly well known. In this way the former pure hunting dog has developed into a valued family and companion dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Galgo Español's short coat (there is also a wire-haired variety) is very easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. As a sighthound he needs the chance to gallop freely in a secure area, but in everyday life he is astonishingly calm and undemanding and loves extended rest periods. Because of his strong prey drive he should stay on the lead outside safe zones. He is sensitive and learns best with gentle, patient methods; former hunting or rescue dogs often need particularly great empathy.

The Galgo Español is a robust, overall healthy breed with a pleasing life expectancy of about twelve to fourteen years. As with all sighthounds, particular caution is required with anaesthesia because of the low body fat percentage. Breed-typical hereditary diseases are rare, as breeding was long geared towards function rather than extreme features. For dogs rehomed from Spain, tests for Mediterranean diseases such as leishmaniasis should be carried out, as reputable animal welfare organisations do anyway.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Galgo Español suits calm people and families who value a gentle, unobtrusive sighthound and give him time to settle in. He also copes well in an apartment, as he is very quiet in the house, but regularly needs safe opportunities to run. For sensitive first-time owners he can be suitable, provided they take his prey drive and his sensitivity into account. In Switzerland many Galgos are rehomed through animal welfare; anyone who gives such a dog a home should bring patience for the settling-in period and observe the leash requirement.
