Finnish Lapphund
🧠 Temperament & character
The Finnish Lapphund is friendly, gentle and decidedly eager to learn, while also being attentive and quite brave. It is very people-oriented, usually gets on excellently with children and other dogs and is considered a patient, easy-going family dog. As a former herding dog it reacts watchfully and reliably sounds the alarm, but tends towards a certain fondness for barking. Despite its gentleness it brings along the typical Nordic stubbornness.
📜 Origin & history
The Finnish Lapphund comes from the far north of Scandinavia, where the Sami used it for centuries to herd and drive their reindeer flocks. It had to work independently in icy cold and yet cooperate closely with people – qualities that shape its character to this day. After the conversion of reindeer husbandry to snowmobiles, it changed from a working dog into a popular family and sport dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Finnish Lapphund's dense double coat keeps out both cold and heat, but sheds plenty of undercoat especially during the moult and then needs daily brushing. It enjoys exercise and needs regular walks as well as mental tasks, but is less extreme than pure working dogs. Thanks to its cleverness and willingness to cooperate, it can be trained well and gladly through positive motivation. Dog sport such as agility or tracking visibly delights it.
🩺 Health
The Finnish Lapphund is generally a healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Points to note are hip dysplasia as well as hereditary eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataract. Responsible breeders have hips x-rayed and eyes examined and carry out genetic tests. This significantly reduces the risk.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Finnish Lapphund is an excellent family dog and, thanks to its friendly nature, also well suited to beginners. It prefers to live closely within the family and should not be left alone much. A house with a garden is ideal, but with enough exercise it also copes in an apartment – provided its tendency to bark is taken into account. Its weatherproof coat makes it an ideal companion for active people, especially in snowy Swiss regions.
