🧠 Temperament & character
The Estrela Mountain Dog is a loyal, watchful and independent livestock guardian dog. Towards its family it is gentle, affectionate and protective, while it meets strangers with natural mistrust and reserve. It is brave and self-assured and, in an emergency, likes to make its own decisions. With the children of its own family it is usually patient, but it needs early socialisation and a calm, consistent hand.
📜 Origin & history
The Estrela Mountain Dog comes from Portugal's highest mountains, the Serra da Estrela, where it has protected sheep flocks from wolves and thieves for centuries. It is one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula and was long the loyal companion of the shepherds in this rugged region. Today it is kept both as a livestock guardian and as a watch and family dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Estrela Mountain Dog comes in a long-haired and a short-haired variety; both have a dense, weatherproof coat that needs regular brushing and sheds heavily during the moult. Its exercise needs are moderate to high: it loves long walks and working outdoors, but is not a restless sport dog. As an independently thinking guardian it needs patient, consistent training and early contact with people and other animals. Force is out of place with this proud breed.
🩺 Health
The Estrela Mountain Dog is an overall robust breed with a life expectancy of around ten to fourteen years. As with many large dogs, hip and elbow dysplasia occur; occasionally heart disease appears. Responsible breeders X-ray the hips and elbows of the parent animals and pay attention to moderate growth of the puppies. A healthy weight additionally protects the joints of this heavy dog.

The Estrela Mountain Dog suits experienced owners with a house and a well-secured property who understand its protective instinct and its independence. For a city apartment or inexperienced first-time dog owners it is less suitable. It feels most at ease with a task and plenty of space, whether as a farm dog or as a companion of active families in the countryside. Anyone who offers it guidance, occupation and loving family attachment gains a loyal and impressive guardian.
