🧠 Temperament & character
The English Toy Terrier is attentive, lively and very affectionate towards its people, to whom it bonds closely. Towards strangers it is rather reserved, yet an alert alarm-giver that little escapes. Despite its tiny size it has preserved its original hunting instinct for rats and mice and, for all its elegance, shows genuine terrier temperament. It is intelligent, sensitive and enjoys learning, but does not tolerate rough handling.
📜 Origin & history
The English Toy Terrier is the toy variety of the Manchester Terrier and goes back to the small black-and-tan terriers that hunted rats and mice in 19th-century England. It was especially popular in Victorian England as a ratter in the notorious 'rat pits', where spectators bet on how many rats a dog could kill in a short time. With the ban on these cruel contests it lost its purpose and turned into a refined companion dog. Today, in its homeland, it is a rare native breed regarded as endangered, with a small gene pool.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short, glossy coat of the English Toy Terrier is extremely easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing; it sheds only a little. Despite its daintiness it is an active little dog that needs daily walks, play and mental stimulation to be balanced. As it is sensitive to cold, it should be protected with a little coat in the Swiss winter. It learns eagerly and quickly, but reacts sensitively and therefore needs loving, calm and motivating training.

The English Toy Terrier is basically a healthy, long-lived dog with a life expectancy of about twelve to thirteen years, sometimes considerably more. As a very rare breed with a small gene pool, preserving genetic diversity is a particular challenge for breeders. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease of the femoral head, patellar luxation and occasionally lens luxation and heart problems can occur. Responsible breeders have eyes, knees and heart examined and plan matings carefully to avoid inbreeding.

The English Toy Terrier is well suited to individuals, couples and quieter families with older children who are looking for a small, affectionate and easy-care companion. Thanks to its size it is an ideal apartment and city dog, but still needs daily exercise and mental stimulation. For first-time owners it is suitable, provided they take account of its sensitivity, sensitivity to cold and daintiness. In Switzerland it is a true rarity, but a charming, unobtrusive companion for people who value a small, elegant dog.
