The Drentsche Patrijshond is gentle, affectionate and decidedly family-oriented, with a close bond to his people. He is sensitive, intelligent and willing to learn, but reacts sensitively to a harsh tone and needs friendly training. In hunting he shows himself to be versatile and enduring, in everyday life balanced and fond of children. Towards strangers he is attentive, which also makes him a discreet guardian.
π Origin & history
The Drentsche Patrijshond goes back to spaniel and pointing-dog types that reached the Netherlands via France and Spain in the 16th century. In the rather remote province of Drenthe the type remained largely pure over the centuries and was valued as a versatile farm dog. In 1943 the breed was officially recognised. To this day it is widespread above all in the Netherlands and rare elsewhere.

The Drentsche Patrijshond's medium-length coat with light feathering is relatively easy to care for; regular brushing keeps it in good condition. As a hunting and farm dog he needs plenty of exercise and mental occupation, for example through long walks, scent work or retrieving games. He is willing to learn and cooperative, but especially appreciates gentle, motivating training. Close integration into the family is important to him, as he does not like to be left alone much.

The Drentsche Patrijshond is considered a fundamentally robust breed with a life expectancy of about twelve to fourteen years. Known breed-typical issues include hip dysplasia, the eye disease progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and the inherited blood-cell change hereditary stomatocytosis. Reputable breeders examine the hips and eyes and use the available genetic tests. Anyone looking for a puppy should specifically ask about these health examinations of the parent animals.

The Drentsche Patrijshond is a versatile family and hunting dog who feels most comfortable in active households with close family contact. Thanks to his gentle, easy-going nature he is also suitable for sensitive first-time dog owners who bring enough time for exercise. Ideal is a home with a garden and plenty of exercise; for a sedentary life in a small apartment he is less suitable. In Switzerland he is rare, but a lovable all-rounder for nature-loving families.
