🧠 Temperament & character
The Continental Bulldog is attentive, friendly and balanced - a good family dog with a stable, sound character. He is affectionate and people-oriented, usually gets along well with children, other dogs and pets, and shows a pleasant basic composure. He is watchful without exaggerated sharpness and announces visitors without being a sharp guardian. Thanks to his good compatibility and friendly nature he is an uncomplicated companion. He is playful and more active than classic bulldogs, without being hectic.
📜 Origin & history
The Continental Bulldog was developed from 2001 in eastern Switzerland by the breeder Imelda Angehrn in the canton of St. Gallen. Her goal was a healthier Bulldog: by crossing the Olde English Bulldogge into the English Bulldog, a dog emerged with a longer muzzle for freer breathing, greater agility and the ability to give birth naturally. In 2004 the breed was recognised by the Swiss Cynological Society, and since 2022 the FCI has listed the Continental Bulldog on a provisional basis. It is thus the youngest officially recognised Swiss breed.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short coat is very easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing; any facial folds should be kept clean and dry. Thanks to his longer muzzle the Continental Bulldog is considerably more active and heat-tolerant than classic bulldogs, but should still be spared on hot days. He enjoys daily walks, play and moderate activities and, thanks to his friendly, teachable nature, is easy to train. Early socialisation and positive, motivating training methods suit this good-natured dog well.
🩺 Health
The Continental Bulldog was specifically bred to avoid the typical health problems of short-headed bulldogs, and reaches a life expectancy of around ten to twelve years. The longer muzzle considerably improves breathing, and the breed is meant to allow natural mating and birth instead of requiring caesareans. Nevertheless, responsible breeding and health examinations remain important: hips, joints and clear airways are monitored. The FCI and the breed association accompany the young breed with health monitoring in order to secure progress in the long term.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Continental Bulldog is an ideal family dog and, thanks to his friendly, balanced nature, also well suited to first-time owners. He fits both a house and - given sufficient exercise - an apartment, and feels comfortable anywhere he has close family contact. As a moderately active dog he needs daily walks and play, but no high-performance sport. As a modern Swiss breed he is especially interesting for people who want to combine bulldog charm with better health and more vitality.
