🧠 Temperament & character
The Cirneco dell'Etna is lively, independent and at the same time gentle and affectionate – an appealing mix of hunting fire and domestic cuddliness. As an original hunting dog he is attentive, curious and enduring, but remains distinctly more sociable and sensitive than many other primitive breeds. He bonds closely with his people and enjoys the closeness of the family. His hunting drive is present, but less extreme than in some of his relatives; nonetheless he needs good safeguarding in a stimulating environment.
📜 Origin & history
The Cirneco dell'Etna is one of the oldest dog breeds of the Mediterranean and is closely related to the ancient hunting dogs of the Pharaoh Hound type. For over two thousand years he has hunted small game such as rabbits in Sicily, especially around the volcano Mount Etna. In doing so he uses eyes, nose and hearing in equal measure and copes with the harsh, hot lava rock with astonishing endurance and frugality – qualities that have shaped this ancient breed over the centuries. Depictions of similar dogs can already be found on ancient Sicilian coins.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Cirneco dell'Etna's short, smooth coat is about as easy to care for as it gets – occasional brushing and wiping down is enough, and he sheds little. In terms of exercise he is an enduring runner who needs plenty of daily exercise and the chance to run every day; he loves sight-chasing games and is well suited to dog sport such as coursing. He is intelligent and eager to learn, but also independent, which is why sensitive, motivating training works best. His fine coat offers little protection against cold, which is why in the Swiss winter he needs warmth and often a coat.

The Cirneco dell'Etna is regarded as an exceptionally healthy, robust and natural breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Thanks to their thousands of years of largely natural breeding background, serious hereditary diseases are remarkably rare. As with all breeds, breeding animals should nonetheless be checked for general health, eyes and the musculoskeletal system. As a slim, fine-limbed dog he is sensitive to cold and knocks; a healthy weight and a balanced lifestyle contribute to his longevity.

The Cirneco dell'Etna suits active people and families looking for an athletic but uncomplicated and affectionate companion. Thanks to his manageable size and his gentleness he is also suited to the apartment and to more sensitive owners, provided he is allowed to run and let off steam every day. He usually gets on well with children. His moderate but present hunting drive calls for attention when off the lead. In Switzerland he is a charming, rare companion who, as a sun-worshipper, appreciates a little protection against the cold in winter.
