🧠 Temperament & character
The Chinese Crested Dog is lively, cuddly and thoroughly people-oriented — he constantly seeks closeness and physical contact. He is sensitive and delicate and therefore reacts badly to a harsh tone, and he loves to be the centre of his family's attention. Playful and affectionate, he bonds closely with his people and does not like to be alone for long. Towards strangers he can be somewhat reserved at first, but soon warms up.
📜 Origin & history
The origin of the Chinese Crested Dog has not been fully clarified; hairless dogs appeared in several regions of the world and were presumably carried on board by Chinese seafarers, where they caught rats. Via trade routes they reached various ports around the world. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was above all American enthusiasts who took up the breed and shaped it into today's companion dog. The hairlessness is based on a genetic peculiarity, from which coated Powderpuffs can also appear in every litter.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
Care differs greatly depending on the variety: the hairless form needs special skin protection — sunscreen in summer, clothing in winter — and regular skin care to prevent acne and dryness. The coated Powderpuff has a fine, long coat that must be brushed regularly. Exercise needs are moderate: daily walks and play are enough for the playful dog. He is intelligent and willing to learn, but because of his sensitivity needs gentle, motivating training.
🩺 Health
The Chinese Crested Dog usually reaches a good age of around 13 to 15 years. In the hairless variety, skin problems such as sunburn, acne and dryness, as well as an often incomplete set of teeth, are to the fore. Typical of the breed, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and patellar luxation can also occur. Reputable breeders have the eyes and kneecaps examined and pay attention to healthy skin and teeth in the parent animals.

The Chinese Crested Dog is an ideal companion for people who spend a lot of time at home and are looking for an affectionate, more care-intensive dog. He is suitable for apartment living and for seniors, couples or quiet families; because of his sensitivity he is less suited to a hectic environment. As a people-oriented dog he copes poorly with being alone for longer periods. In Switzerland, with the hairless variety one should bear in mind consistent protection from sun and cold.
