🧠 Temperament & character

The Cesky Fousek is balanced, biddable and exceptionally weather-hardy, a versatile working dog with a calm basic nature. He is intelligent, willing to work and enjoys learning, but needs a meaningful task and plenty of exercise. Towards his family he is loyal and affectionate, towards strangers attentive. His high need for work demands consistent, active owners.

πŸ“œ Origin & history

The Cesky Fousek is an old Bohemian breed of wire-haired pointing dogs that was already prized centuries ago in Central Europe. After the First World War it was almost extinct and was purposefully reconstructed in the 1920s and 1930s; after the Second World War the population had to be rescued again. In doing so, a strict selection for performance and versatility was relied upon. Today the Cesky Fousek is a highly regarded all-purpose gundog in the Czech Republic.

βœ‚οΈ Grooming, care & training

The Cesky Fousek's rough, dense wire coat with beard and undercoat is weatherproof and easy to care for; regular brushing and occasional stripping are enough. As an all-purpose gundog he has a very high need for exercise and work, which is met by long runs, retrieving and nose work as well as hunting tasks. He is clever and eager to learn and needs mental occupation to be content. Consistent, fair leadership brings his versatility out best.

🩺 Health

The Cesky Fousek is considered a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Thanks to strict performance breeding, serious hereditary diseases are rare; occasionally hip dysplasia occurs, and as with large breeds attention must be paid to the risk of gastric torsion. The ears should be checked regularly. Responsible breeders X-ray the hips and test the hunting aptitude of the parent animals.

🏑 Who is this breed right for?

The Cesky Fousek is an all-purpose gundog and ideally belongs in hunting or very active hands. For people who can offer him plenty of physical and mental work every day, he is a loyal, versatile companion. For pure apartment keeping without a task or for little-active owners he is unsuitable. In Switzerland he finds a fitting home above all with hunters and very athletic people.
