Romanian Bucovina Shepherd Dog
🧠 Temperament & character
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is a calm, even-tempered and self-assured dog with a deep bond to his family and a very pronounced protective and territorial drive. As a classic livestock-guardian dog he acts independently and, in an emergency, makes his own decisions, which makes him courageous but also demanding to lead. Towards strangers he is distrustful and watchful, yet gentle and loyal towards his people and the animals entrusted to him. He is inclined to deep, warning barking, especially at night, and needs early, consistent socialisation so that his protective behaviour develops in a controlled way.
📜 Origin & history
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog comes from the historical region of Bucovina in the north-east of Romania and the adjoining Carpathians, where for centuries it guarded the shepherds' flocks in the mountains. Together with the other Romanian shepherd dogs it defended the livestock against bears, wolves and lynxes and was indispensable to traditional pasture farming. It was selected exclusively for strength, weather-hardiness, courage and protective instinct, not for a uniform appearance. The breed was standardised only late and is provisionally recognised by the FCI; outside Romania it remains rare.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog's dense, medium-length to long double coat is weatherproof and relatively easy to care for, but must be brushed regularly, considerably more often during the moult, as he then sheds heavily. As a large, deliberate livestock-guardian dog he does not need performance sport, but rather extended, calm walks, plenty of space and, ideally, a genuine guarding task. In training, patience, consistency, fairness and respect for his independence are called for - drilling and harshness are counterproductive with this independent dog. Early, careful socialisation and a secure fence are essential, as he defends his territory consistently.

The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is considered a robust, primitive breed with a life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years. As a large, heavy dog he is prone above all to hip dysplasia and, as a deep-chested molosser, to life-threatening gastric torsion. Because the breed is still young in terms of organised breeding, comprehensive health data is limited; responsible breeders nonetheless X-ray the hips and pay attention to healthy joints, correct growth and a stable temperament. Moderate growth, an adapted diet and avoiding large meals around exertion are important precautions.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is suited exclusively to experienced owners with plenty of space, a well-secured property and, ideally, a genuine guarding task in a rural setting. He is entirely unsuited to a flat, to beginners or to people without the time and experience for large, independent guard dogs. Towards his family he is gentle and loyal, but his protective drive, his size and his nocturnal barking demand a suitable environment and confident leadership. In Switzerland he is very rare; before acquiring one, any cantonal regulations for large guard-dog breeds should also be clarified.
