The Braque Français type Pyrénées developed from the old, larger Braque Français in the regions around the Pyrenees into a smaller, lighter and livelier variety. Over time he became the more popular of the two types, because he is more manageable and nimbler. In the 20th century the breed was officially divided into the two types Gascogne and Pyrénées. Today the Pyrénées type is more widespread in France than its larger relative.
