The Braque Français type Gascogne is gentle, balanced and remarkably easy to handle, an easygoing pointing dog with a calm disposition. He searches thoroughly and not too far-ranging, always in good contact with his handler. Towards his family he is affectionate, congenial and patient, also with children. Despite his calmness he needs regular exercise and occupation.
📜 Origin & history
The Braque Français is one of the oldest pointing dogs in Europe and goes back to medieval pointing dogs of south-western France. The large Gascogne type is regarded as the original form from which numerous continental Braque breeds emerged over the centuries. After a decline the breed was preserved by enthusiasts in the 20th century and split into two types, Gascogne and Pyrénées. Today the Gascogne type is the rarer, larger variety.

The short coat of the Braque Français type Gascogne is easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. As a pointing dog he needs sufficient daily exercise, preferably in field and forest with the opportunity for scent work. Thanks to his ease of handling he is pleasant to train and responds well to friendly, consistent methods. The long ears should be checked to prevent inflammation.

The Braque Français type Gascogne is regarded as a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Serious breed-typical hereditary diseases are rare; hip dysplasia can occasionally occur. Thanks to the broad, work-oriented breeding approach the breed has remained healthy overall. Reputable breeders X-ray the hips and pay attention to temperamentally sound, healthy parent animals.

Thanks to his gentle, patient nature he also suits first-time owners with time for exercise. Ideal is a home with plenty of outdoor exercise; he is not made for pure apartment living without occupation. In Switzerland he is rare, but a pleasant companion for nature-loving people.
