The Braque du Bourbonnais is affectionate, balanced and willing to work, a pointing dog that loves close cooperation with his owner. He is sensitive and bonds strongly with his family, which is why he dislikes being left alone. On the hunt he shows himself passionate and versatile, in everyday life friendly and easy-going. His eagerness to learn and his gentle nature make him a pleasant companion.
📜 Origin & history
The Braque du Bourbonnais is a very old French breed that was mentioned as early as the 16th century and is known for its frequently congenital stumpy tail. By the middle of the 20th century the breed had almost died out. From the 1970s onwards, dedicated enthusiasts under the leadership of Michel Comte rebuilt the population and saved the breed from disappearance. Today it is re-established, but remains rare.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short, fine coat of the Braque du Bourbonnais is very easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. As an active pointing dog he has a high need for exercise and loves long outings with scenting and retrieving tasks. He is eager to learn and easy to handle, but especially appreciates friendly, patient training. Because he is strongly oriented towards his people, he should not be left alone for long periods.
🩺 Health
The Braque du Bourbonnais is regarded as a robust, healthy breed with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years. Serious breed-typical hereditary diseases are rare; occasionally, as in many pointing dogs, hip dysplasia can occur. The frequently congenital short tail is a natural peculiarity and not a health problem. Serious breeders X-ray the hips and pay attention to a healthy gene pool.

The Braque du Bourbonnais suits active families and hunters who are looking for an affectionate, versatile pointing dog with close family ties. Thanks to his gentle, easy-to-handle nature he is also conceivable for committed first-time owners, provided enough exercise is offered. Ideal is a home with plenty of outdoor exercise in nature and much shared time. In Switzerland he is rare, but a pleasant companion for sporty people.
