The Bouvier des Ardennes is lively, robust and courageous. He is affectionate, watchful and devoted to his family, while being a rustic working dog with great stamina. Towards strangers he is attentive without being overly suspicious. His down-to-earth, uncomplicated nature makes him a pleasant companion for active people.
📜 Origin & history
The Bouvier des Ardennes comes from the rugged Ardennes, where for generations he was the all-purpose dog of the farms. He drove cattle, guarded the farmstead and even helped hunt wild boar. After the decline of small-scale farming and the turmoil of the world wars, the breed almost disappeared. Only thanks to dedicated enthusiasts does the original, robust farm dog still exist today.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The rough, shaggy and weatherproof coat with its distinctive beard is pleasingly easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. As a true working dog, the Bouvier des Ardennes needs plenty of exercise and meaningful activity. Long walks, hikes, herding or search work keep him well occupied. He is clever and eager to learn, but likes to think for himself - varied, fair training suits him well.

The Bouvier des Ardennes is considered a robust, original breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 13 years and only a few known hereditary diseases. The small, work-oriented gene pool has largely spared the breed from over-typing. As with all breeds, responsible breeders should nevertheless x-ray the hips and pay attention to general health. Overall he is a tough, healthy dog.

The Bouvier des Ardennes suits active, nature-loving people who appreciate an uncomplicated, robust working dog. He is ideal on a farm or in an exercise-loving family with enough room to run. He is less suited to quiet apartment households without occupation. As he is very rare, interested owners should expect a longer search and waiting times with the few breeders.
