๐Ÿง  Temperament & character

The Tervueren is attentive, sensitive and decidedly people-oriented. He is eager to learn, active and reacts very sensitively to his handler's mood, which is why he needs close involvement and fair leadership. Towards strangers he is watchful but not aggressive. His sensitivity makes him a wonderful partner for perceptive owners, but it also calls for a delicate touch in training.

๐Ÿ“œ Origin & history

The Tervueren owes its name to the Belgian town of Tervuren and was recognised at the end of the 19th century as the long-haired, fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd. Like his relatives he originally served as a herding dog for sheep. Thanks to his intelligence and versatility he developed into a valued companion, sport and working dog. Today he is popular above all in dog sports and as a demanding family dog.

โœ‚๏ธ Grooming, care & training

The long, smooth coat with its black overlay needs regular brushing, especially during the moult. Far more important, however, is keeping him occupied: the Tervueren needs plenty of daily exercise and mental challenges. Obedience, agility, tracking or dog dancing suit his alert, learning-hungry nature perfectly. Because he is sensitive, training should always be motivating and fair.

๐Ÿฉบ Health

The Tervueren is considered a largely healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Epilepsy occurs in some breeding lines, occasionally also hip dysplasia as well as gastrointestinal sensitivities. Reputable breeders X-ray the hips and pay attention to healthy, sound-tempered lines. As with all Belgians, the shared gene pool of the four varieties contributes to genetic diversity.

๐Ÿก Who is this breed right for?

The Tervueren suits active, perceptive people who spend a lot of time with their dog and give him both mental and physical outlets. For first-time owners he is manageable with commitment, but he is less suited to quiet or inactive households. In a sporty family with older children he is a loyal, affectionate companion. Anyone who does dog sports and seeks a close bond will find in him a wonderful partner.
