🧠 Temperament & character
The Laekenois is lively, alert and self-confident. Like all Belgians he is eager to work, intelligent and closely bonded to his people, while remaining watchful towards strangers. He needs consistent, loving guidance as well as plenty of physical and mental activity. When under-challenged he tends towards nervousness and acting on his own initiative.
📜 Origin & history
At the end of the 19th century the Belgian Shepherd was divided into several varieties, named after places around Brussels. The wire-haired Laekenois owes his name to the royal Laeken Castle; among other duties, his ancestors guarded the linen laid out to dry in the fields. He is the most original and, to this day, the rarest of the four varieties. Despite his rarity he has remained a capable herding, guard and working dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The rough, wiry and shaggy coat of the Laekenois is not clipped but instead groomed by hand from time to time and lightly trimmed. It sheds little but should be combed through regularly. More important than coat care is keeping him occupied: the Laekenois needs plenty of daily exercise and mental work. Dog sports, tracking or protection work channel his will to work ideally.
🩺 Health
The Laekenois is among the most robust and least burdened of the Belgian varieties and usually lives 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally, and epilepsy in some lines. Because of the small gene pool, responsible breeders pay particular attention to health and genetic diversity. Regular hip X-rays and temperament tests are part of serious breeding.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Laekenois suits active, experienced people who can handle and keep a genuine working dog occupied. He is less suitable for first-time owners or quiet households, but in sporty, committed hands he is a loyal companion. As he is very rare, you should expect waiting times with serious breeders. In Switzerland he is hardly widespread and is mainly something for enthusiasts of the breed.
