🧠 Temperament & character
The Groenendael is alert, spirited and very attached to his family. He is highly intelligent, eager to work and learns quickly, but for that he needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Towards strangers he is attentive and rather reserved, which makes him a good watchdog. Without a task and close involvement he can seem nervous or over-excited.
📜 Origin & history
The Belgian Shepherd Dog was systematically catalogued at the end of the 19th century by the Belgian professor Adolphe Reul and divided into several varieties in 1891. The long-haired, deep-black Groenendael owes its name to the château of the same name near Brussels, where the breeder Nicolas Rose shaped the breed. Originally bred as a herding dog for sheep, it soon proved itself as a guard, police and service dog as well. Today it is a valued companion and sporting dog.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The Groenendael's long, smooth coat needs regular brushing, especially during the moult, but mats less than a shaggy coat. Far more important is keeping him occupied: this dog needs a lot of daily exercise as well as demanding mental work. Dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking or protection work are ideal. He is very willing to learn and sensitive – a calm, fair and consistent upbringing suits him best.
🩺 Health
The Groenendael is considered a largely healthy breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Epilepsy occurs in some breeding lines, occasionally also hip dysplasia as well as gastrointestinal sensitivities. Reputable breeders X-ray the hips and pay attention to healthy, temperamentally sound lines. Because the four Belgian varieties may be interbred, the gene pool is comparatively broad.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
The Groenendael suits active, committed people who want to spend a lot of time with their dog and keep him occupied. For first-time owners he is only suitable with a great deal of dedication, and rather not for quiet apartment households without a programme. In a sporty family with older children he is a loyal, alert companion. Anyone who does dog sports or is active outdoors will find in him an enthusiastic partner.
