The Stumpy is alert, independent and enormously enduring. He is loyal, eager to work and devoted to his family, yet naturally reserved towards strangers. His pronounced droving instinct and self-reliant nature call for consistent, calm leadership. As a classic working dog, he needs a meaningful job to stay balanced.
📜 Origin & history
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog emerged in the early 19th century from crosses of native dingoes with the herding dogs of the first settlers. He is regarded as the older of the two Australian cattle drovers and was used to drive semi-wild cattle across the endless expanses of the continent. Unlike the better-known Australian Cattle Dog, he is born with a natural bobtail – and to this day he has remained a rarity even in Australia.
✂️ Grooming, care & training
The short, dense double coat is weatherproof and low-maintenance, needing only occasional brushing. The Stumpy is a true working dog and accordingly needs plenty of exercise as well as mental challenges. Droving work, long hikes or dog sports keep him physically and mentally satisfied. He enjoys learning but thinks for himself – clear structures and fair consistency are decisive.
🩺 Health
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is considered a particularly robust and healthy working breed with a life expectancy of around 12 to 15 years. Serious hereditary diseases are rare; as in related breeds, hereditary deafness can occasionally occur. Responsible breeders therefore carry out BAER hearing tests and pay attention to healthy joints. Thanks to the small, work-oriented gene pool, the breed is on the whole little overbred.
🏡 Who is this breed right for?
This breed suits active, experienced people who can offer an original working dog a real task – for instance on a farm or in dog sports. The Stumpy is not meant for first-time owners, city flats without adequate activity, or the role of a pure lapdog. In Switzerland he is extremely rare and is most likely of interest to lovers of original droving dogs. With clear leadership and enough exercise, he becomes a faithful, reliable companion.
